This is the gear I use to play and livestream games, in case you ever wondered (you probably didn’t)!
I have three different gaming setups: Retro, Modern, and handheld.
Retro Setup
I had a huge collection that I had to sell off circa 2010, and as of 2020 I’ve started rebuilding that collection. I’m also a cheapskate, so most of my gear is repaired, recycled, or otherwise obtained as cheaply as possible so I can stretch the budget out and get more and more crap!
TV
I’m using an old LED TV that used to be my primary, a 1080p 37″ from Samsung (before smart TV’s were commonplace, thankfully). Hardly the best for old games, but I’ve managed to make it work with specific cables and gear, and it’s been reliable for years now.
HDMI Switch
To connect everything, I’m using a no name 4 port HDMI switch I got off Amazon at some point. I REALLY want to upgrade this to a 16 port HDMI switch of some kind, but it’s not cheap. For now, I labeled the cables and just swap the front port as needed and pray one day I can be rid of this cable nest.
Consoles
NES
I rescued this NES from eBay. It’s been fully cleaned (pretty much true about all of my old consoles), inside and out, the PIN connector for cartridges has been replaced, and I disabled the lockout chip.
I use a wireless 2.4Ghz 8BitDo SN30 controller instead of the stock controller. Wireless is too nice, but I have to have something analogous to the original controller shape and this does the job.
I have composite video and doubled mono audio going into a RetroTink Mini, which properly displays the video on an HDTV, and for the capture card.
Sega Genesis
I’m using an 8Bitdo M30 2.4Ghz wireless controller. I actually really like the Sega designed 6 button controller, but this is very nice as well. For HDMI, I use RetroGameCables RetroTink cable, and it was absolutely worth it.
